Yala National Park is the most famous wildlife sanctuary in Sri Lanka and one of the best places in the world to see leopards in their natural habitat. Located in the southeastern region of the island, about 300 km from Colombo, Yala attracts thousands of nature lovers and wildlife photographers every year.
Established as a national park in 1938, Yala covers nearly 1,000 square kilometers of diverse landscapes including forests, grasslands, lagoons, and coastal areas. The park is widely known for having one of the highest densities of leopards in the world, making leopard sightings relatively common during safari tours.
Besides leopards, visitors can also encounter large populations of elephants, sloth bears, crocodiles, spotted deer, wild boar, and many other animals. The park is also a paradise for birdwatchers, with more than 200 bird species recorded in the area.
A unique feature of Yala is its proximity to the ocean, where wildlife roams close to beautiful coastal lagoons and sandy beaches. Nearby sacred sites such as Kataragama and the ancient Sithulpawwa Rock Temple add cultural significance to the region.
With thrilling jeep safaris, incredible wildlife diversity, and dramatic natural scenery, Yala National Park offers one of the most unforgettable safari experiences in Sri Lanka.
