Galle

Details

Galle is one of the most beautiful and historic coastal cities in Sri Lanka. Located about 120 km south of Colombo, Galle is famous for its colonial architecture, stunning ocean views, and rich cultural heritage.

The city is best known for the iconic Galle Fort, a UNESCO World Heritage Site originally built by the Portuguese in the 16th century and later expanded by the Dutch. Surrounded by massive stone walls overlooking the Indian Ocean, the fort contains charming cobblestone streets, historic churches, boutique hotels, museums, cafés, and art galleries.

Visitors can explore many historic landmarks inside the fort, including the Galle Lighthouse, the oldest lighthouse in Sri Lanka, and the Dutch Reformed Church (Groote Kerk), a beautiful colonial-era church built in 1755.

Beyond the fort, Galle offers beautiful nearby beaches such as Unawatuna Beach and Jungle Beach, popular for swimming, snorkeling, and relaxing by the sea. The area is also known for its vibrant cafés, seafood restaurants, and local markets.

With its mix of history, culture, architecture, and tropical beaches, Galle is a must-visit destination for travelers exploring Sri Lanka’s southern coast.
